Making Hoop Vision-style content in March is challenging.
On the one hand, it’s the best time of year to get eyeballs on our videos. On the other hand, the news cycle moves fast.
By contrast, Hoop Vision content takes time to create. For example, I started working in January on the UConn video that came out just last week. Of course, I wasn’t working on that video every single day between January and March, but needless to say a lot of hours went into the final product.
The past few years, we’ve released our “68 Teams” video on Selection Sunday — one fact or observation about every NCAA tourney team. It’s a fun video, but it’s also extremely time-consuming. Additionally, it underperformed last season — getting about 50,000 views under expectation.
So this season, I decided to ditch the 68 Teams video and work on something different. Last week, I started going through as many Indiana State games as possible in the research phase of a video about Robbie Avila.
The problem (as you probably know) is that the Sycamores didn’t win the MVC tournament. They’re on the bubble, where they’ll likely be about 50/50 to get into the field. If they do get in, there’s a good chance they will be in a play-in game — which would then give my video an even shorter shelf life after the bracket is released.
After going over all of the possibilities and probabilities, it just doesn’t make sense to continue with the Indiana State video.
So instead, I decided to take some of the ISU material that I had previously been working on and put it into today’s newsletter. The specific topics are listed below.
Why Robbie Avila is the “anti-Edey”
Hi-Lo flashes to attack mismatches
Pistol rolls and the step-up screen
A set play Josh Schertz runs that involves a shallow cut
